DAVE'S STORY
Hi my name is Dave McElhinney. 2004 was my first trip to work with the Turkana people, I remember walking in a dried up river bed where I came across a small child approx one year old. He was naked and crying at the top of his lungs, as I came towards him I was startled to see a small girl of about 7 years old at the bottom of a hand dug well approx 12 feet deep. Her bother was thirsty so she was scooping muddy water into a rusty tin can to quench his thirst. It was at that moment that knew we needed desperately to help these forgotten people.
In 2006 we returned to Lokore to refurbish some water wells and add a storage facility unto the community center. While we were driving through Lockichoggio, a community 1 hour north of the village of Lokore, I looked out in the distance saw a woman bent over in the middle of the road. As we approached the woman, we noticed she was trying to retrieve sewage water that had been released onto the road from a nearby compound. She was desperate to bring water to her family and her way of thinking was, if it is liquid we can drink it! As we slowly passed by I turned to the two men I was traveling with and noticed the tears running down their cheeks, needless to say they were lost for words. This is just one of many such stories of the hardships and desperation the Turkana people face daily. Together we can make a difference!!
